Supporting Collaborative Public Engagement for Rural Communities Exploring Renewable Energy and Landscapes
About Us
The Institute for Rural Collaboration is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit that empowers rural communities through locally led, collaborative learning processes. Rural communities across the country are being asked to navigate significant changes to their landscapes, economies, and ways of life as new infrastructure, development, and investment projects are proposed. These changes can raise difficult questions about community identity, sense of place, security, and local priorities. IRC provides financial and technical assistance to help communities engage in structured, collaborative conversations about the decisions that affect them most, ensuring residents have the tools and support needed to participate meaningfully in shaping their future.
We help rural communities navigate what's next.
The Institute for Rural Collaboration helps rural communities navigate complex decisions through collaborative learning, transparent processes, and meaningful public engagement. We believe better decisions happen when the people most affected have a genuine voice in shaping them.

Rural communities are often on the front lines of significant change, from new infrastructure and development proposals to broader shifts that affect local landscapes, economies, and community life. Too often, residents are brought into the conversation too late, consulted without being heard, or left to navigate complex decisions without adequate support. IRC exists to change that.

By providing financial and technical assistance, we help communities create structured opportunities for dialogue, learning, and problem-solving. Our goal is to ensure that rural residents have the tools, information, and support they need to engage constructively in decisions that will shape the future of their communities and landscapes.
Early, meaningful engagement
We help communities engage early in important decisions, creating opportunities for learning, dialogue, and collaboration before conflicts become entrenched.
Transparent processes
Trust depends on a Full, Open, and Transparent Exchange (FOTE). We help create processes that provide access to information, encourage honest dialogue, and ensure community members can participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their future.
Local capacity
We equip local leaders and residents with the tools, resources, and support they need to navigate complex issues and shape their community's future.
